Documents a council may accept
Official council pages commonly name a driving licence, Council Tax bill or utility bill. Birmingham lists these examples for booked visits. Calderdale asks permit applicants for a Council Tax reference and tells site users to take identification that clearly shows their address.
That does not make the same list valid everywhere. One council can accept a bill on a phone while another can ask for a recent paper document. Use the list for the site you plan to visit.

Why the address can be checked
Household recycling centres are funded to serve a defined local area. A resident check helps the council separate household use from non-resident and trade use. Some councils allow non-residents for a fee, while others do not allow them at all.
The check can happen when you apply for a permit, when you book, at the gate or at more than one stage. Automatic number plate recognition does not always replace the need to carry evidence.
If your documents do not fit the standard list
Do not borrow another person's proof or use an old address. Contact the waste team and explain your position. Students, people who have recently moved and adults living with family can need a different check.
Ask what the council will accept and keep its reply with your booking. If the site cannot confirm that you are eligible, use your own council's service or a permitted private service instead.
